Remote desktop

How to log on Remote Desktop via kontor.hioa.no to access to your desktop and files from outside campus. Guides for Windows and macOS.

Note! Use the browser Internet Explorer for the best functionality.

The browsers Firefox, Chrome and Opera works as well.

1. Login to kontor.hioa.no

Login to https://kontor.hioa.no

  1. Username:  username@oslomet.no, e.g. jarle@oslomet.no
  2. Password: OsloMet password
  3. Click the button: Sign in

2. Overview of applications

After login you can start the various applications.

Remote App and Desktops

Available applications:

  • Office 2013 (all of the Office tools in the folder)
  • Statistics (various statistics applications in the folder, like STATA and SPSS)
  • Adobe Reader (for PDF)
  • Calculator
  • Firefox (browser)
  • Thunderbird (email client for setup of IMAP settings)
  • Paint (photo editing software)
  • PuTTY (a terminal emulation program to log on to computers, routers or other devices that use Telnet, Rlogin eller SSH)
  • WordPad (simple word editor)
  • Remote Desktop ("Eksternt Skrivebord" in Norwegian - access to your desktop with files etc.)

3. Remote desktop

You can access your desktop with files.

  • Click the icon for "Eksternt Skrivebord".

Applies only to Firefox browser:

  • Select: Open With
  • Click: OK

3.1 Access to Remote Desktop Connection

  • Click: Connect

 Login Windows Security (applies only for Firefox browser)

A login window for Eksternt Skrivebord (in Firefox) appears.

  1. Username: username@oslomet.no (entered in advance once you are logged in).
  2. Password: Enter OsloMet password (the empty field).
  3. Click: OK

3.2 Connecting Remote Desktop Connection

3.3 Eksternt Skrivebord - access to full desktop environment

Eksternt Skrivebord/Remote desktop shows your desktop with all your folders and files. You can work as normal from your desktop.

  • Windows Start menu: Click on the icon to the left.
  • You now have access to your home and public directory and Office applications.

3.4 Windows Start menu

The Start menu provides access to various functions.

3.5 Disconnect Eksternt Skrivebord / Remote desktop

Your open applications / windows remain open so you can log in and get them back up.

  • Click on the X to the right in the toolbar at the top of the desktop view ...

  • Or click on Disconnect under the ON / OFF button.
  • If you want to exit / log off, see the next section below.

3.5 Log off/Sign out from Eksternt Skrivebord / Remote desktop

  • Click on your name to display the menu to log off / shut down.
  • Click: Sign Out.

4. Access to Office applications

  • Click on the folder «Office 2013»

4.1 Overview of Office 2013 applications

Start an Office applications (applies only for Firefox)

  • Click on an icon to start an application, e.g. PowerPoint.
  • Click: OK - to open an application.

4.2 Run the program

  • Click: Connect - to run the program.

Login (applies only for Firefox)

  1. Username is entered in advance once you are logged in, e.g. britth@oslomet.no
  2. Password: Enter your OsloMet password
  3. Click: OK
  4. The program starts.

4.3 Return to main page

  • Click on the yellow folder with the text "Up" to return to main page.

5. Statistical programs

  • Click on the folder "Statistics" to use the available statistical programs.

5.1 Available statistical programs

The following statistical programs are available:

  • Amos graphics
  • File Manager
  • IBM SPSS Statistics 22
  • Language
  • Program Editor
  • Seed Manager
  • STATA

5.2 To start a program

  1. Click on the icon to open a program.
  2. Click: OK
  3. Then click: Connect
  4. Login: Enter your OsloMet password (username@oslomet.no is entered in advance)

Follow the same procedure as in step 4.

If a program fails 

If a program does not start normally, it may lack one of several additional programme files (.exe file) that also need to be run. Notify any issues to: bit@oslomet.no

5.3 Return to main page

  • Click on the yellow folder with the text "Up" to return to main page.

2. Connect Mac to kontor.hioa.no

Preconditions

The Microsoft Remote Desktop application must be installed in advance.

  1. For a OsloMet Mac (hosted by OsloMet): Microsoft Remote Desktop is pre-installed. Find Microsoft Remote Desktop here: / Applications / Microsoft Remote Desktop
  2. For a private Mac: Download Microsoft Remote Desktop.

1. Open Microsoft Remote Desktop

  • Go to kontor.hioa.no 
  • Log in using your OsloMet email address: username@oslomet.no and your password.
  • Select the application you want to use. 
  • Open the downloaded file.

2. Microsoft Remote Desktop

You can access a number of other applications via Remote Desktop connection.

  • Start the desired application from the list.

3 Access to applications - Apps

To see all apps or applications open Eksternt skrivebord (remote desktop)

  • Click the icon for Windows on the left bottom corner.
  • This opens the Start menu, see the screenshot below.

  • Select the arrow at the bottom of the screen - to access all applications.

4 To navigate in Windows Explorer

To return one or more steps or navigate in Windows Explorer, you can navigate in the menu. See the screenshot below.

  • Select Desktop or Computer - to access the desktop environment.
  • Select: File Explorer - to access your files and folders in your home directory.

5. Log off Remote Desktop

  • Go to the Windows menu: Select the icon for Windows or the Start menu at the bottom left to get the screen below.
  • Disconnect: The icon to turn off / Disconnect is to the right of your name. See screenshot below.
