Housing for international employees and guest researchers

Various resources are available to OsloMet's international employees.

The HR department offers assistance in connection with the practical preparations ahead of  arrival in Oslo, including housing. All international employees are invited to fill in a Relocation Questionaire. We can provide general assistance such as advice and information about locations, different rental companies, translation of housing advertisements etc., but unfortunately we are not able to attend house viewings, contract meetings and the like.

A housing subsidy scheme has been established for international employees. Information about the subsidy scheme and the guidelines can be found here. NB! Due to lack of strategic funds for 2018, the housing subsidy scheme will expire on 31 December 2017 and housing support must be applied for directly from HR at the faculty or centre.

Long term rental for international employees - beyond 3 months

For 6-12 month rentals, the university has an agreement with SiO for its employees.

Through this agreement we can offer affordable bedsitters suitable for one person. The price is NOK 5025 per month, including electricity and security deposit.

The bedsitters are located in corridors assigned entirely to OsloMet employees. Tee bedsitters include private, en suite rooms and a shared and spacious kitchen and dining area. Private kitchen cupboards, as well as a spacious basement booth, are included. The bedsitters are newly renovated, they appear modern and nice and come with basic furnishings such as a bed, desk, chair, bookcase and wardrobe. Additional resources for long term rentals:

  1. As a member of Oslo Chamber of Commerce, OsloMet can purchase additional services through their International Network of Norway (INN). An agreement can be made with INN for assistance with house-hunting for long term rentals. Contact HR at your faculty for information on prices, etc.
  2. Search the private market on finn.no  or Leie bolig.

Short-term rentals for international employees - up to 3 months

Guest researchers, adjunct professor staff and guest lecturers often need shorter period housing. Even if they intend to stay for a longer period of time, having a temporary place to live while getting to know Oslo might be relevant. Here are some suggestions:

  • Katharinahjemmet at Majorstuen is a good option. The minimum stay is two nights and the price for a single room is 500 NOK per night. Monastery guesthouses are common in other parts of the world and you do not have to be a believer to stay here.
  • Cochs pensjonat in Parkveien is another good alternative.
  • The P-hotel at Grensen is a cheaper option to many other hotels. Admittedly, breakfast is served in a bag at the door, but this should not be a problem for experienced travelers who are happy to arrange for themselves.
  • Frogner House Apartments rent out apartments of different sizes, all are furnished and centrally located.
  • Another option is Sabbatical Homes where researchers who are going abroad for a while, rent out their own homes.
